Weekends are best time to visit and spend a great day shopping and exploring Miami's unique shops and galleries
SULLIVAN STREET ANTIQUES Open 7 days, 10-5 Dick Baker's store, Sullivan Street Antiques, is Miami's largest antique store, and he's open every day. You'll find a large, continuously changing selection of quality furniture ranging from the formal and elegant to the country and casual. Smaller items include lamps, linens, glassware, kitchenware, cast iron cookware, books and tools. He also tries to maintain a good selection of mining-related items and artifacts from Miami's history. Because he has such a spacious interior, Dick usually has a few very large items that simply wouldn't fit inside most stores. Recent large items have included an Amish horse-drawn buggy and a 12-foot harvest table.
Building History and Restoration The downstairs of this two-story building was always a furniture store. The upstairs began as a 12-room brothel, and later became a more conventional hotel that closed in the late 1940s. When Dick Baker bought the building in 2000, it had no functioning water, sewer, gas or electricity. About 1950 a previous owner had removed the balcony over Sullivan Street (historically the only one on the street) and stuccoed over the door and windows out to the balcony. The façade of the building will eventually be restored to approximately its original appearance. Dick briefly considered re-establishing the upstairs brothel, but decided to convert the area to three apartments, the front one being his own. |
